About the Artist – Josiah Sugden
My name is Josiah Sugden, and I am a visual artist based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I am a proud graduate of Messiah University, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in 2D Studies. I graduated in the spring of 2025, and it is now both an honor and a joy to pursue my passion for creating meaningful artwork for clients and art enthusiasts like you.
Like many, my artistic journey began in childhood. However, what sets my path apart is a lifelong commitment to nurturing and refining that early spark of creativity. From a young age, I was fascinated by a wide range of subjects—from natural landscapes and waterfalls to portraits of celebrities, family, and friends. It wasn’t until the end of my elementary years that I discovered a deeper interest in portraiture, which has remained a central focus of my work ever since.
Over the years, I have come to understand that art is not just something I do—it is an essential part of who I am. I feel most at home working in two-dimensional media and am constantly exploring new techniques and materials. I enjoy challenging myself creatively and welcome opportunities to step outside of my comfort zone in order to grow as an artist.
While I’ve experimented with various styles and mediums throughout high school and college, I have found my true passion in hyperrealistic portraiture, particularly using charcoal and graphite. These mediums allow me to capture an extraordinary level of detail, bringing each subject to life in a way that is both precise and expressive. The process of rendering every nuance and feature is like solving a complex puzzle—and the satisfaction that comes with completing each piece is unparalleled.
Today, I am committed to turning my artistic practice into a professional career. My goal is to create high-quality, custom artwork that resonates with others and brings their visions to life. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share my work and to connect with others through the power of portraiture.
