Portrait Commission Process Guide
Thank you for your interest in a custom charcoal & graphite portrait. Below is a simple overview of my commission process so you know exactly what to expect from start to finish.
1. Reference Photo
You will send me a high-quality, close-up reference photograph for your portrait commission. The clearer and higher quality the photo is, the more detail and accuracy I can achieve in the final drawing.If you have multiple photos and are unsure which one would work best for a portrait, you are welcome to send several options. I can help choose the reference that will create the strongest composition and best final result.Once received, I will carefully crop and adjust the image to the correct size and ratio while making sure the composition looks balanced and visually appealing.After the adjustments are made, I will email the edited composition back to you for approval before sending you the invoice.
2. Contract & Deposit Invoice
Once we have finalized the reference photo, I will send you:
An invoice for the 50% non-refundable deposit based on your selected portrait size
A commission contract for you to review, sign, and date
The contract is designed to protect both the client and the artist while clearly outlining expectations for the commission process. Once signed, a copy of the completed contract will automatically be sent to your email for your records.
3. Beginning the Artwork
After the contract is signed and the 50% deposit is paid, I will begin working on your portrait as soon aspossible.During the drawing process, I may send one or two progress updates so you can see how the portrait is developing.If the artwork is intended to be a surprise gift, I can avoid sending progress photos and instead simply keep you updated on the timeline.
4. Final Review & Remaining Payment
Once the portrait is completed, you will receive one free revision if there is an area you would like refined or
adjusted.
After final approval, I will send:
A final photograph of the completed portrait
An invoice for the remaining 50% balance
Shipping and packaging costs (if applicable)
Local pickup or drop-off arrangements may also be available.
5. Packaging & Shipping
If your artwork is being shipped, I take extra care to ensure it arrives safely and securely.To protect the drawing:
* A professional fixative is applied to help prevent charcoal smudging
* The artwork is wrapped in protective glassine paper
* The drawing is secured between foam core boards to prevent bending during transit
* Everything is packaged carefully inside a durable shipping envelope with “Fragile” labeling for careful handling
